FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ACTIVE WALWORTH FORUM APRIL 16TH 2013
Open Forum at InSpire For Community Networking and Support
Establishing links with our neighbours and our community isn’t always easy and in these difficult economic times when many are feeling isolated and vulnerable support, help and advice is ever more vital.
Addressing this is ACTive Walworth, a programme delivered at local community centre InSpire, The Crypt at St Peters, Liverpool Grove. London. SE17 2HH.
The programme which began in October 2012 and has just completed its second successful training course, is delivered in partnership with several local organisations including; BACKR, Community Action Southwark and Volunteer Centre Southwark. The supporting organisations provide training, resources and contacts that participants require in order to actively address the needs of their communities. ACTive Walworth also helps with; training bursaries, start-up funds, space in kind and offers the support participants need in delivering their own grass roots projects, or in obtaining voluntary placements with local existing organisations.
Recent participants include local residents Mohammed Aden and Mohamed Abali. They fled the civil war in Somalia for life in the UK. Since arriving in London they have discovered that many members of their community are suffering post-traumatic stress from the horrors they witnessed back home, along with difficulties surrounding language and poverty.
They identified that frequently these struggles led to mental illness and depression, exacerbated by a lack of awareness of the support and services that are available in Southwark. For many years they have been thinking of ways they can help and have agreed on an awareness and signposting body called ‘MAAN’, they had this to say;
“ACTive Walworth have provided us with training and have set up meetings with local service providers to help us map out the services that are available to support our community in Southwark. They have also offered to help us with start-up costs and space in kind which is the difference between us being active and just having an idea”
In order to promote the work of ‘MAAN’ and the projects of other learners on the programme, ACTive Walworth will be hosting a forum at InSpire on Tuesday April 16th 2013 from 6pm-9pm. The forum will provide a platform for residents, service providers, committees and community workers to share ideas, projects and resources. It will also be a chance to discuss the ways that the ACTive Walworth forum and website (www.activewalworth.com) can best serve the community.
A delicious, free, locally sourced banquet created by participants of InSpire’s own Food and Gardening project will be provided!
Entry is free but capacity is limited. If you are interested in attending or finding out more about ACTive Walworth please email email@example.com or call 020 7703 4309. Alternatively drop into InSpire, The Crypt at St Peter’s, Liverpool Grove, SE17 2HH for more information.
